Bird Flu Hits Connecticut Again

In New Haven County, Connecticut, bird flu has struck another backyard flock. This is the second time this month that the highly contagious H5N1 strain has been confirmed in the state. Officials have taken swift action, quarantining the area and putting down the affected birds to stop the disease from spreading. The Connecticut Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory did preliminary tests, with the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s lab still working on further analysis.

Earlier in January, a similar case was reported in New London County. That flock included chickens, ducks, and peacocks as pets, not for commercial use. They had close contact with wild birds near a pond. The state’s Agriculture Commissioner, Bryan Hurlburt, emphasized the importance of protecting both animal and human health. He urged flock owners to monitor their birds closely and report any suspected cases promptly. Experts assure that the risk to humans is low, even with the virus present in the state. The situation highlights the need for responsible bird ownership and vigilance in maintaining health standards.
