Bird Flu in California: New Cases and Concerns
California, USAWednesday, October 16, 2024
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has confirmed the virus in 299 herds across 14 states, with over 100 million poultry and 10,000 wild birds affected. The virus can jump back and forth between birds and cows, making it harder to contain. Each transfer increases the risk of mutations that could make it more dangerous to humans, similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Bird flu is not just a U.S. problem. France has raised its threat level to "moderate," while countries like Germany have also reported cases. Australia is the only continent free from H5N1, and they've invested $96 million in vaccines and surveillance to keep it that way.
