Bird Flu in California: What You Need to Know

In California, two farm workers have been found positive for bird flu. This marks the first time people in the state have gotten this virus. The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said they caught it from dairy cows at work. These cases are separate, meaning there's no connection between them. The workers live in Central Valley. They had mild symptoms like pink eye but didn't have breathing problems or need to go to the hospital. The California Department of Public Health thinks the risk is low for most people, but those who work with infected animals, such as dairy or poultry farm workers, might be at a higher risk.

There have been outbreaks among dairy cows in California since August. The first case was confirmed on March 24. So far, there are 14 human bird flu cases in the United States. Four of these were from exposure to dairy cows, ten from poultry, and one from an unknown source. It's important to remember that bird flu isn't something you easily catch just by being near infected animals. Most people don't get it unless they have direct contact with sick birds or their droppings. Always follow safety guidelines if you work around these animals.
