In the Miami Valley, bird flu is causing quite a stir. Over 4 million chickens and turkeys in Darke and Mercer counties have tested positive for the disease, according to the Ohio Department of Agriculture (ODA). This is a big deal, especially when you think about how it might affect your grocery bills. The ODA has been busy trying to control the spread by quarantining affected facilities and "depopulating" birds, which means killing them to stop the disease from spreading. As of now, over 1. 9 million birds have been dealt with this way, with more than 1. 8 million still waiting. In Darke County alone, another 190, 000 chickens have been culled, but it's unclear if they had the flu. This isn't the first time bird flu has made headlines. Back in January, almost 2 million chickens and over 72, 000 turkeys were already removed. And in December, an additional 930, 000 chickens met the same fate. People are worried that all these lost birds will drive up the price of food in stores. One shopper, Stephanie Diaz, expressed her concerns, saying, "That's a lot of birds, and farmers have to destroy them, which could make grocery prices go up. " The exact locations of these birds weren't immediately shared. But the ODA reports that a total of over 6 million commercial birds in the Miami Valley have tested positive for bird flu in 2025. Local news is keeping a close eye on this situation.
