Blue Origin's Giant New Rocket: When Will It Launch and What's Its Goal?

Get ready! Blue Origin, the company owned by Jeff Bezos, is gearing up to launch its massive New Glenn rocket—which stands at 320 feet tall—into space for the very first time! This rocket has been in development for almost a decade and could shake things up in the commercial space industry and in the satellite internet business, currently dominated by Elon Musk's SpaceX. New Glenn has a unique design, powered by seven BE-4 engines that burn liquified natural gas and liquid oxygen. Blue Origin plans to reuse New Glenn's first stage for up to 25 missions by having it land vertically on a platform in the sea. The upper stage, which isn't reusable, can carry heavy loads: 13 metric tons to geostationary transfer orbit, and a whooping 45 metric tons to low Earth orbit. Plus, it's designed with safety features that allow it to carry humans in the future.

The first launch of New Glenn will take place from Cape Canaveral, Florida. It has a three-hour window starting at 1 AM ET (10 PM PT) on January 12th. The original date, January 10th, was delayed due to rough seas in the Atlantic. This uncrewed launch will carry the Blue Ring Pathfinder, a device that tests equipment for future space missions, like refueling and data relay. Blue Origin CEO David Limp said the main goal is to get New Glenn into orbit. Landing the reusable booster is an added bonus.
