Blue Wins Emmy: A New Look at a Louisiana Legend
A recent national Emmy Award has been awarded to the documentary Blue – The Life and Art of George Rodrigue.
The film tells the story of the famous painter known for his blue dogs and Louisiana scenes, following Rodrigue’s entire career and showing how he captured the spirit of his home state in paint.
The award was accepted by Jacques Rodrigue, the artist’s son and director of the George Rodrigue Foundation. He expressed great pride in receiving this honor, especially because only a handful of regional documentaries are nominated each year. The recognition feels like a dream for both the family and Louisiana storytellers.
The documentary was produced by WLAE-TV in New Orleans, under the guidance of director Sean O’Malley. Jacques and his brother Andre helped provide rare footage from the artist’s studio—a first in thirty years. They also shared many of the original paintings and interviews that had been archived by Jacques for years.
In addition to family members, the film features conversations with art experts and well‑known fans such as chef Emeril Lagasse, former Saints quarterback Drew Brees, and strategist James Carville. These interviews give a broader view of Rodrigue’s influence beyond the art world.
“Blue” has earned several accolades before this Emmy, including a Suncoast Regional Emmy and a Silver Telly Award for long‑form documentary. It has also been showcased at festivals in New Orleans, Amsterdam, and Cannes. The collection of awards highlights the film’s impact on both local and international audiences.
