To address this surge, MUSC Health has announced a $30 million investment to expand its emergency department services at its downtown Columbia Medical Center. The expansion plan is designed to nearly double the number of beds in the emergency department, allowing for improved access and patient care. According to Dr. Bill Phillips, chief medical officer for MUSC's downtown Columbia and Northeast locations, the investment is crucial to meet the increased demand for emergency services. "As we continue to serve the community, we need to expand and add beds to our emergency room," he explained. The growth of Columbia's population, driven by the development of more residential homes downtown, has created a pressing need for enhanced emergency services. Phillips emphasized that the $30 million investment will enable MUSC to provide better care to patients, saying, "We're very excited about it." The expansion and renovations are slated to begin in December 2023, with completion expected by early 2026.
