Boosting Farm Fish with Biofloc: A Tale of Feed and Growth

Ever thought about replacing pricey fish feed with something cheaper and maybe even better? Well, scientists did just that with common carp (Cyprinus carpio var. Communis). They used a mix called biofloc to feed the little guys. Biofloc is like a special smoothie for fish, made from algae and bacteria that grow naturally in water. One study added neem leaves (from the Azadirachta indica tree) to this mix. Neem leaves are like nature's antibiotic, fighting off bad germs.

The researchers did two experiments, each lasting 120 days. One group got plain biofloc, and the other got biofloc with neem. They tested different feed amounts, from no feed at all to lots of feed. Some fish got a regular diet, while others just got biofloc. The results? Fish that got a mix of biofloc and some feed grew faster and healthier. Those that got no feed had a tough time, with many not making it. The neem-added biofloc helped some, but too much neem might not be good. It could mess with the water's nitrogen levels, which fish need to grow. So, biofloc can be a great tool for fish farming. But it needs to be used just right, with a careful balance of feed and the right amount of neem.
