Boosting Global Surgery with Better Hygiene

When it comes to global surgery, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), infection prevention and control (IPC) takes center stage. Without reliable IPC measures, surgical site infections (SSIs) and other healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) can run rampant, leading to higher risks of illness and increased costs. While efforts exist, like the World Health Organization's (WHO) guidelines, consistent application of IPC is still a challenge.

By tightly integrating IPC into surgery processes, health systems can reap numerous benefits: reduced hospital stays, curbed spread of drug-resistant bugs, and vital cost savings. This approach aligns with global health goals, such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), aiming to narrow the healthcare inequity gap. After all, keeping surgery safe and affordable is key to achieving universal health coverage and better public health worldwide.
