Boosting Plastic Degradation with Biochar and Iron
Monday, December 23, 2024
The bacteria and iron worked together to keep more nitrogen in the soil, which is great for plants. They also found that this mix can break down a type of plastic called PBAT by 31. 6%. That's a big deal because it means we can get rid of plastic waste in a more environmentally friendly way.
The study also showed that this method changes the types of bacteria in the compost. Some bacteria, like Sphingobacterium and Pseudomonas, were more common. These bacteria are good at breaking down the plastic. The scientists even found that higher composting temperatures helped break down the plastic faster.
So, what does this all mean? It means that by using this special mix, we can make composting better for the environment and for plants. It's a win-win!
