Boston Marathon 2024: Runners Gear Up as Security Steps Up

Boston, USASaturday, April 18, 2026

Runners from all over the globe are heading to Boston for the 130th Marathon, eager to test their limits while officials keep a close eye on safety.

The race will start in Hopkinton and cut through eight towns before finishing on Boylston Street, drawing about 30,000 athletes this year.

With tensions in the Middle East rising, authorities describe the event as a “heightened threat environment,” urging spectators to stay alert and report anything odd.

Despite the heightened concerns, no concrete threats have been identified; officials promise to stay vigilant throughout the weekend.

At Back Bay, marathon fans and elite runners gathered in front of the Fairmont Copley Hotel, where they answered media questions and watched crowds line up in Copley Square Park.

Local fan Sterling Crockett, a six‑time Boston marathoner and Dana–Farber Cancer Institute charity member, expressed excitement about tackling Heartbreak Hill for the first time.

At the Hynes Convention Center, thousands queued to receive race numbers and explore expo stalls. Participants like Sydney Champeau, a trauma nurse from Los Angeles, shared her enthusiasm for the city’s preparation work.

More than 10,000 volunteers—including a thousand medical helpers—will support runners across the course. Long‑time organizer Linda Fechter highlights the event’s deeper meaning for many, from cancer survivors to milestone celebrants.

Spectators are encouraged to use public transit, leave large items at home, and be prepared for security checks; officers and cameras will monitor key points along the route.

Mayor Michelle Wu framed the marathon as part of a larger burst of city events, noting that the excitement will carry through the summer with World Cup, Sail Boston, and other celebrations.
