Boston Stadium Gets World Cup Green Light

Foxboro, Massachusetts, USAThursday, March 19, 2026

The Foxboro Select Board has given the final nod to bring the 2026 World Cup to Gillette Stadium, which will be renamed “Boston Stadium” for the event.

Police Chief Michael Grace praised the decision, saying the city will feel a new level of excitement that it has never experienced before.

Earlier this year, the chief had criticized the local nonprofit host committee for not meeting public‑safety expectations. Now that criticism is behind them, the city and the stadium’s operator have agreed to cover Foxboro’s $7.8 million request for security staff and equipment.

The tournament will host seven matches at the venue, including five group‑stage games and two knockout rounds between June 13 and July 9. The World Cup is rated a SEAR 1 event, the highest risk category for public gatherings in the United States.

Chief Grace highlighted that security planning has been continuous for 18 months and is now in a strong position.

Boston Soccer 2026’s lawyer, Gary Ronan, informed the board that the host committee has already deposited about $1.5 million into a town escrow account and will pay public‑safety invoices within one business day during the tournament. He thanked everyone for working together to secure FIFA’s entertainment license.

The Kraft Group has pledged to cover any remaining funding gaps, ensuring that the total security budget will exceed $5 million in addition to the $1.5 million already committed.

Select Board Chairman Bill Yukna noted that the community has fulfilled its duty and protected taxpayers.

With these agreements in place, Foxboro is ready to welcome the world’s best soccer teams and fans for a month‑long celebration of sport, safety, and community pride.
