Brace Yourself: A Solar Storm is Coming!
Thursday, October 3, 2024
Now, you might be wondering if we should worry. The good news is that these storms won't directly affect us humans. However, they can mess with sensitive electrical systems like power grids and satellites. But don't forget the bonus: bright auroras! These light shows could be visible over many northern U.S. states and even farther west.
Solar activity follows a cycle that lasts about 11 years. We're currently in the twenty-fifth cycle, which started in 2020. Astronomers initially thought this would be a mild cycle, but it has turned out to be quite powerful. The storm we had in May was severe, followed by an even stronger flare.
So, while these solar events can be unpredictable, they also bring beautiful natural light shows. Keep your eyes on the sky!
