Tennessee is about to experience a polar vortex, bringing dangerously cold temperatures. Overnight lows will plunge into the teens and 20s, posing a serious risk of frostbite in minutes.

What is a Polar Vortex?

A polar vortex is a large area of low pressure and cold air around the Earth's poles. Normally, it keeps cold air contained, but when it expands, it sends Arctic air southward. This phenomenon is affecting not just Tennessee, but also the central and eastern United States.

How to Stay Warm

Layering is crucial. Wear multiple thin layers instead of one thick one. Essential accessories include:

  • A coat
  • A hat
  • Gloves
  • Warm shoes or boots
  • A scarf or face mask

Opt for wool or fleecy synthetics—cotton is only good if it stays dry.

Nighttime Protection

  • Thermal underwear
  • Bed socks

Understanding Wind Chill

Wind chill can make the air feel much colder than it is. When wind chills drop below zero, frostbite and other cold-weather illnesses can occur in minutes.

Cold-Weather Illnesses

Hypothermia

  • Can occur in 10 minutes in sub-30-degree weather if improperly dressed.
  • Symptoms: Shivering, fatigue, confusion, loss of consciousness.
  • Treatment: Move to a warm room, remove wet clothing, and warm up with an electric blanket or skin-to-skin contact.

Frostbite

  • Can set in in 30 minutes under the same conditions.
  • Symptoms: Numbness, tingling, aching, bluish or pale, waxy skin.
  • Treatment: Get to a warm room immediately and immerse the affected area in warm water.

Stay Safe

This is the second round of cold air moving through the Eastern part of the country, with more expected. Stay warm, stay safe, and be prepared.
