Antonio Delfim Netto, the legendary Brazilian finance minister who masterminded the country's economic boom in the late 1960s and early 1970s, has passed away at the age of 96.

During his tenure as finance minister from 1967 to 1974, Mr. Delfim Netto served as the economic architect of the military regime that ruled Brazil for over two decades, overseeing an unprecedented period of economic growth. Mr. Delfim Netto, a titan of Brazilian economics for half a century, died on Monday in Sao Paulo after being hospitalized due to health complications.

Despite his strong ties to the military regime, his vast experience and expertise made him an informal economic advisor to several presidents, including leftist leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. As finance minister, Mr. Delfim Netto played a crucial role in Brazil's economic miracle, with the country's GDP expanding at an average annual rate of 10%, a record that remains unbroken.

His influence extended beyond his tenure as finance minister, as he served as agriculture and planning minister in the final years of the military dictatorship and later as a congressman. Lula, who returned to the presidency last year, acknowledged his evolving views of Mr. Delfim Netto in a statement issued after his death.

Despite their political differences, Lula recognized Mr. Delfim Netto's contributions to the development and social inclusion policies that he implemented during his first two terms in office. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad and Luiz Carlos Trabuco Cappi, the chairman of Banco Bradesco SA, both paid tribute to Mr. Delfim Netto, praising his dedication to Brazilian economic progress and his role in modernizing the country's economy.

Mr. Delfim Netto is survived by a daughter and a grandson.
