Breath Testing for Killer Whales: A Non-Invasive Health Check
Friday, December 6, 2024
Before we can trust this method, we need to figure out what normal breath metabolites look like for killer whales of different ages and health conditions. This study aims to do just that – describing the typical variations in the “metabolome” across different ages and genders.
There's potential here to develop a useful tool for assessing the health of both captive and wild killer whales. Being able to gather health data without causing extra stress is a big deal. However, more research is needed to fully understand the clinical significance of these metabolites.
Imagine if we could "listen" to a whale's breath and get a clear picture of its health. That's what this study is working towards. It's an exciting approach that could revolutionize how we care for these majestic creatures.
