Bribes, Arrests and Police Scandal Shake New York City
Frank Carone, former chief of staff to ex‑Mayor Eric Adams, was taken into custody early Monday after federal agents seized his home. Investigators say he accepted money routed through his brother, Anthony Carone—who was also arrested during the operation—and linked to a contract that turned a hotel into a homeless shelter.
The case is part of a broader corruption probe that has targeted several high‑ranking police officials. Police officers, including former Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey and Assistant Chief James McCarthy, had their homes searched, but no arrests were made from those raids. The investigation began after Maddrey was accused of misusing funds and later forced to resign over allegations of sexual misconduct.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the Internal Affairs Bureau and the FBI carried out the searches. She stressed her commitment to integrity in the department and said the probe would continue.
The full indictment is expected later Wednesday, but details of the charges remain unclear. Meanwhile, Adams’ spokesperson praised Carone’s long public service career and expressed prayers for his family.
