The Bronx Splits Police Operations to Combat Record Emergency Call Volume

A Borough Under Pressure

In a bold strategic move, the Bronx has officially divided its police operations into two distinct commands—North and South—to better manage its unprecedented surge in emergency responses. The decision comes in response to last year's staggering nearly one million 911 calls, the highest volume of any borough in New York City.

Police leadership acknowledged that the previous single-command structure was struggling to keep pace with rising demands. Under the new system, dedicated homicide and evidence teams will now be assigned to each region, ensuring swifter and more localized responses.

The New Command Structure

North Command

  • Base: 48th Precinct
  • Coverage: Precincts 46 through 52

South Command

  • Base: Renovated former 40th Precinct
  • Coverage: Precincts 40 to 45

To bolster these efforts, over 200 additional officers will be deployed specifically in the Bronx—without diverting resources from other boroughs.

Citywide Violence Reduction Plan: A Targeted Approach

As part of a broader initiative, 2,500 officers will be stationed across 72 designated hotspots, with a sharp focus on evening and overnight hours when shooting incidents traditionally peak. Strategic deployments will prioritize high-risk areas such as parks, beaches, and neighborhoods most affected by gun violence.

Early Successes

Initial data from pilot locations—including Coney Island and Prospect Park—reveals a 41% reduction in major crime.

Yet, despite these promising trends, recent incidents serve as stark reminders of the persistent danger:

  • A five-year-old child was grazed by a stray bullet.
  • A 15-year-old teenager was fatally shot in a park altercation.
  • A seven-month-old infant succumbed to injuries from a stray bullet.

These tragedies highlight the urgent need for both increased police presence and preventive measures to protect vulnerable communities.

A Call for Holistic Solutions

Mayor Mamdani emphasized that the city’s efforts must extend beyond statistics, aiming for safer schools and fuller dinner tables. While the structural changes in the Bronx mark a critical step forward, the broader battle against gun violence remains a pressing challenge—one that demands both enforcement and prevention.
