Brucellosis Among Farmworkers: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Health in Indonesia

In the heart of Indonesia, brucellosis is making waves, especially among farmworkers in Cilawu and Boyolali. This infectious disease, caused by animals, has become a growing concern in developing countries, including Indonesia. The symptoms are vague, making it hard to detect. A recent study focused on understanding the link between brucellosis cases among farmworkers and their knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors. The study took place in dairy cattle milking centers in Boyolali and Cilawu. Researchers collected blood samples from 149 farmworkers who fit the inclusion criteria. Structured interviews were conducted to gauge their understanding and attitudes towards brucellosis in humans. The rose bengal test (RBT) and complement fixation test (CFT) were used to analyze the blood samples.

Results? In Boyolali, 3. 3% of respondents tested positive for RBT, while in Cilawu, that number jumped to 7. 01%. However, CFT results showed something different: 5. 3% of respondents were positive in Cilawu, but none in Boyolali. Despite the tests, the study revealed that many farmworkers lacked proper understanding and positive attitudes towards human brucellosis. While their work practices for maintaining healthy cattle were good, their personal health care was wanting. This study highlights the urgent need for action. Public health professionals and policymakers must step in to provide regular health education and ensure the availability of personal protective equipment for these farmworkers.
