Brunswick High’s First Hall of Fame: Legends Honored

"Brunswick High School is celebrating its very first Hall of Fame class, a move that highlights the school’s rich athletic history. The ceremony is slated for October, giving fans time to prepare for a night of remembrance and pride. Over the past month, more than twenty people were nominated. The selection panel sifted through candidates ranging from 19th‑century alumni to recent stars, finally choosing nine standout figures. These include five athletes who made their mark on the field or court, two coaches whose guidance shaped future champions, a contributor whose dedication to running helped many succeed, and even an entire team that left its legacy behind. One of the inductees, Mal Strange, captured a state golf title in 1952 and later led Brunswick’s high‑school team for nearly two decades. He also spent years as a professional at the local golf club and helped design part of its course. His lifelong love for the sport is still evident as he teaches lessons even in his nine‑teens. Cal “Stump” Merrill’s story is a blend of baseball and football triumphs. He earned a place on a statewide all‑time baseball team, led his school to a football championship, and later played professionally in the Philadelphia system before managing for the New York Yankees. His career spanned nearly forty years, and he was honored in several halls of fame.

John Dumont balanced football and baseball at Brunswick, then went on to achieve notable success at the University of Maine. He became the first Black Bear to hit a home run in the College World Series and later returned to coach at his alma mater, guiding both sports to over a hundred wins. Joanna Palombo McCallie’s basketball journey began with an impressive scoring record in high school, followed by a notable college career and then a coaching tenure that led teams to NCAA tournaments. Her record as a Division‑I coach spans multiple conferences, earning her national recognition. Will Geoghegan dominated cross country and track in high school, holding records that still stand. He continued to excel at Dartmouth and Oregon, earning all‑American honors before turning professional with Nike. Coaches Lisa Gilbride and Peter Gardner left indelible marks on tennis and soccer respectively. Gilbride guided girls’ tennis to state titles, while Gardner’s coaching led the boys’ soccer team to six championships and a record 615 wins. Finally, Dan Dearing’s lifelong commitment to running produced countless champions and state titles. His passing in May 2025 left a void that the Hall of Fame aims to honor.
