Brutal Attack on Doctor Sparks Widespread Protests
Kolkata, IndiaWednesday, October 9, 2024
The West Bengal government has promised to meet some of the protesters' demands, including replacing key officials involved in handling the case. However, the Supreme Court criticized the state's decision to avoid assigning female doctors to night duties, insisting that security measures should be implemented instead of concessions.
This brutal attack is just one in a series of violent incidents against healthcare professionals in India. A 2015 survey by the Indian Medical Association revealed that 75% of doctors had faced some form of violence. The 2012 Delhi gang-rape case, which garnered international attention, led to legal reforms but rape cases remain a grave issue, with over 31,500 cases reported in 2022 alone. Experts warn that the actual numbers could be much higher due to the stigma surrounding the victims.
