Building a Better Phantom: A Tetrahedral Mesh for Chinese Women

Creating detailed surface phantoms of Chinese women of childbearing age is great, but they can't be used directly in Monte Carlo simulations. Instead, these surface phantoms have to be turned into voxel phantoms, which might lose some of their initial advantages. So, the goal of this study is to build a tetrahedral mesh (TM) phantom based on the Boundary Representation (BREP) phantom. This includes adding micron-level details to certain organ tissues while keeping the original structure intact.

The beauty of this TM phantom is that it can be directly used in Monte Carlo codes to calculate the radiation dose at different energy levels. The study shows that both the structure and position of organs affect how much radiation is absorbed. By getting more accurate dose assessments, we can enhance radiation protection and lower the risks for women of childbearing age.
