Building a Team from Scratch: Trump's Unique Challenge
WashingtonMonday, September 23, 2024
One expert notes that Trump's track record is marked by his ability to attract loyalists, but often at the expense of qualifications and expertise. "He's gregarious and friendly to staff, but he has a way of getting information from a lot of different sources. So, you always had to adapt and stay on your toes," said Marc Short, a former Trump advisor.
Trump will need to find individuals who are both loyal to him and respected in their fields to win Senate confirmation. Sen. Mitt Romney, a Trump critic, warns that it will be a challenging task: "The question is whether they are people of stature or capacity and are up to the job required and whether they could be confirmed."
Potential Cabinet picks include Sen. Marco Rubio for Secretary of State, Sen. Mike Lee for Attorney General, and Sen. Tom Cotton for Defense Secretary. However, Trump's history of publicly criticizing his former officials may make it difficult to attract top talent to his team.
