Building Skills: Columbia Falls Eyes New Trades Academy
Expanding on a Successful Partnership
The Columbia Falls School District is advocating for a new charter school with a focus on trades. This initiative builds upon their established collaboration with Glacier National Park, where students have been constructing cabins and other structures for years. The partnership involves the school, the park, and the Glacier National Park Conservancy, which provides funding for the program.
Plans for Expansion
The district aims to expand this successful model to the old Canyon Elementary School campus. They are seeking state funding to bring this vision to life. Six school districts in Montana are competing for a share of $1 million, with Columbia Falls requesting approximately $347,000 in the first year. The plan is to start with 45 students and grow to 65 by the fifth year.
Comprehensive Curriculum
This charter school will offer more than just trades education. It will also include core subjects such as math, English, and other essential skills. If approved, the school will begin on the high school campus in 2027 and move to the former Canyon Elementary School in 2028.
A Unique Proposal
Columbia Falls' plan is distinctive as it is the only trade-focused charter school proposed this year in Montana. It boasts a proven track record, setting it apart from other proposals, which include alternative high schools and healthcare-focused programs. The district will learn in mid-January if they have been selected.
Community Support
Supporters of this initiative can send letters to the state board. These letters can be emailed to McCall Flynn or Lea Ann Munkres. Although it is a charter school, it will remain under the School District 6 Board. The goal is to attract students from across the Flathead Valley.
