California Finds First Case of Rare Mpox Strain, Public at Low Risk

In a surprising turn, California health officials just confirmed the first-ever U. S. case of a more severe mpox strain, known as clade I. The individual had recently traveled from Africa and is currently recovering at home in San Mateo County. Despite this discovery, the risk to the general public remains low, as there's no evidence of the strain spreading among people in California or the U. S. Clade I mpox has historically been more severe than the other known type, clade II. However, recent cases suggest it may not be as harsh when patients have access to good medical care. Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, spreads through contact with infected animals or humans, and symptoms include fever, rash, headache, and swollen lymph nodes.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been warning travelers to Central and Eastern Africa about the ongoing mpox transmission. In these regions, the virus spreads through sexual contact, close household contact, and healthcare settings without proper protective equipment. Just this month, four cases of clade I mpox were detected in Britain, all within the same household. Globally, there have been 88 deaths and 21, 370 cases since January, with 3, 004 cases of clade II in the U. S.
