Campus Safety Under Scrutiny: 60 Universities Face Federal Warnings
USATuesday, March 11, 2025
The OCR has the authority to enforce Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This law prohibits any institution that receives federal funds from discriminating based on race, color, or national origin. National origin includes shared ancestry, such as Jewish ancestry. The OCR is taking these steps to ensure that all students, regardless of their background, can pursue their education in a safe and inclusive environment.
The OCR has also launched directed investigations into five universities. These investigations are in response to widespread reports of antisemitic harassment. The remaining 55 universities are under investigation or monitoring due to complaints filed with the OCR. The OCR is committed to resolving these complaints and ensuring that all students are protected from discrimination and harassment.
The OCR has made resolving the backlog of complaints alleging antisemitic violence and harassment a priority. This includes complaints that were allowed to languish unresolved under the previous administration. The OCR is working to ensure that all students have access to a safe and inclusive educational environment.
