Canada & U. S. : Talking Borders and Tariffs at Mar-a-Lago

High-ranking Canadian officials met with some of Donald Trump's top aides at his Mar-a-Lago estate. Canadian Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly were there to chat with Howard Lutnick (future commerce department head) and Doug Burgum (future interior department head). The meeting was all about border security and the potential tariffs Trump threatened to impose. A rep from the Canadian Finance Ministry called the meeting "positive and productive. " They talked about Canada's Border Plan, which focuses on strengthening border security and fighting fentanyl trafficking. This plan is meant to help both Canadians and Americans. But did the meeting change anything about those tariffs? Not really. Lutnick and Burgum just agreed to pass on the info to Trump. The Trump team didn't have any comments right away.

Going into the meeting, Canada was focused on a few things: stopping fentanyl and illegal migration, and explaining why a 25% tariff on Canadian goods wouldn't be good for either country. Trump has been talking about these tariffs for a while, saying it's all about border security. He thinks Canada and Mexico are letting drugs like fentanyl into the U. S. But data shows that most fentanyl is seized elsewhere, not at the northern border. Canada and Mexico are big trading partners with the U. S. , so if tariffs happen, it'll have a big effect. Trump has been joking about calling Trudeau the "governor" of Canada, even suggesting the U. S. could add Canada as the 51st state.
