Canada & U. S. : Talking Borders and Tariffs at Mar-a-Lago
Mar-a-Lago, Palm Beach, USASaturday, December 28, 2024
Going into the meeting, Canada was focused on a few things: stopping fentanyl and illegal migration, and explaining why a 25% tariff on Canadian goods wouldn't be good for either country.
Trump has been talking about these tariffs for a while, saying it's all about border security. He thinks Canada and Mexico are letting drugs like fentanyl into the U. S. But data shows that most fentanyl is seized elsewhere, not at the northern border.
Canada and Mexico are big trading partners with the U. S. , so if tariffs happen, it'll have a big effect. Trump has been joking about calling Trudeau the "governor" of Canada, even suggesting the U. S. could add Canada as the 51st state.
