Another newcomer, "The Unbreakable Boy, " didn't fare as well. The faith-based film, starring Zachary Levi, earned $2. 5 million from 1, 687 venues. Despite mixed reviews, audiences seemed to enjoy it, giving it an "A" on CinemaScore.
"Paddington in Peru, " the third adventure about the marmalade-loving bear, dropped to third place with $6. 5 million from 3, 890 cinemas. The family film has been more popular internationally, earning $150 million to date. It still has a long way to go to catch up with the first two films in the series.
"Dog Man, " a kid-friendly film, remained at No. 4 with $5. 9 million from 3, 179 venues. The film has been a hit with younger audiences, earning $78. 7 million domestically and $104 million globally.
Rounding out the top five is "Ne Zha 2, " a Chinese-language animated film. The movie earned $3 million from just 800 theaters in its second weekend. While it's impressive for a foreign language film, it's nothing compared to its success in China. "Ne Zha 2" has become a runaway smash in the Middle Kingdom, earning $1. 7 billion and counting. It's now the biggest animated film in history and the eighth-highest grossing release of all time.
The box office trends show that while superhero films still have a strong following, they're not immune to declines. It's a reminder that even the most popular franchises can face challenges. The success of horror and animated films shows that there's still an appetite for a variety of genres.
