Carlos Yulo: Investing in Philippine Sports Future

Carlos Yulo, a hero in the Philippines for bringing home two Olympic gold medals, is now planning to give back. The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos Jr., praised his incredible feat, noting that it’s a first for the country. While Carlos is celebrated, he has bigger plans. He wants to inspire a new generation of athletes. One way he’s doing this is by setting up training camps in the Philippines. He recently visited the National Academy of Sports in Capas, Tarlac, and is eager to work with students there. “I can share my experiences from Japan and top competitions. It will help me grow too,” he said. Currently, only nine students out of 229 in the academy are in gymnastics, but Carlos’ involvement could change that quickly.

Carlos has committed $90,000 to upgrade equipment at the academy. This isn’t just about improving facilities; it’s about fostering homegrown talent. Athletes won’t need to leave the country to pursue their dreams, unlike Carlos who moved to Japan at 16. His journey wasn’t easy. He struggled with language and culture, but his determination never wavered. His coach even offered him a ticket back home, but Carlos stayed strong.
