Celebrating 250 Years: A Fair on the Mall
The National Mall kicked off the United States’ 250th‑anniversary celebrations with a vibrant new fair. A towering Ferris wheel and a rodeo show drew families to the promenade linking the Capitol with the Washington Monument. The fair opened on Thursday, following President Donald Trump’s rally the night before—an event that saw several planned performers withdraw amid concerns it could become partisan.
“Good family time on a nice summer day,” said an Ohio attendee whose children were thrilled to see the city from the Ferris wheel.
Another guest from Virginia praised the fair’s music and attractions, noting it offered a chance to feel the country’s spirit.
The event is part of a larger series leading up to July 4th, the day Americans celebrate independence from Britain in 1776. Alongside temporary pavilions on the Mall, Trump’s administration is making permanent changes to Washington: demolishing part of the White House East Wing for a ballroom and proposing a large arch near Arlington National Cemetery.
Political Tensions
Many view the anniversary celebrations as political. A recent poll showed a majority of Americans—including most Democrats and half of Republicans—believe the events have become too partisan. Seven states with Democratic governors, including Oregon, chose not to send delegations because of cost and political concerns. While organizers claim all 50 states will be represented, some state officials disagree.
Critics argue that the president’s emphasis on a “great” America downplays painful parts of history such as slavery and Native American oppression. The fair itself contained little mention of these issues, reflecting the president’s stated preference to focus on positive aspects of the nation.
Family‑Friendly Highlights
Despite the political debate, many attendees enjoy the fair for its family-friendly entertainment and the opportunity to gather in a historic setting. The Ferris wheel, rodeo, music, and attractions provide a festive atmosphere that appeals to visitors of all ages.
