Celebrating 250 Years of Freedom on Staten Island

Staten Island, NY, USATuesday, July 21, 2026

Staten Island came alive last week for a free festival that marked the 250th birthday of America. The event, hosted by City Councilmember Frank Morano, drew thousands to the historic Conference House Park.

Instead of starting with fireworks, organizers opened the evening by sealing a time capsule at the site where the only Peace Conference of the American Revolution took place on U.S. soil. The capsule holds letters, photos, keepsakes and video messages from locals, promising to be opened in 2076 for the nation’s tricentennial.

Music filled the air as the Tottenville High School Marching Band, Painless Project, and the Staten Island Philharmonic performed for families. Food trucks offered a variety of treats, while vendors showcased local products and patriotic displays, including a huge American flag hanging over Hylan Boulevard.

Life Scout Vincenzo Marando, working on his Eagle Scout project, built a brick and concrete well to house the capsule. The Hall family donated a cap stone for the project, linking the community’s present to its historical roots.

Councilmember Morano praised volunteers, performers and sponsors such as the New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin, the Carl V. Bini Memorial Fund and local businesses for making the celebration possible. “Preserving our ideals is a shared duty,” he said, highlighting the event’s reminder of courage and perseverance.

State Senator Andrew Lanza joined Morano in placing items into the capsule, calling the ceremony “awe inspiring.” Other community leaders—including representatives from Crossroads Unlimited, Louie’s Legacy Animal Rescue and the Sons of the American Revolution—shared their gratitude for the turnout, noting how the event showcased Staten Island’s compassion and patriotism.

Guests also signed a parchment copy of the Declaration of Independence, which will be sealed with the capsule as evidence of community participation. The evening concluded with a spectacular waterfront fireworks display, leaving attendees with memories that will last for years.
