Celebrating Ohio’s Nature Heroes

Ohio people who protect the land and water deserve a big thank‑you. The state’s Department of Natural Resources has a Hall of Fame that honors those who work hard to keep Ohio beautiful. Since 1966, about 200 people have been added to this list. Names like Johnny Appleseed and Louis Bromfield show the mix of history and modern effort in this group. Anyone who was born in Ohio or has spent their life caring for the state’s natural resources can be considered. The nomination process looks for people who bring new ideas or creative solutions to environmental problems. Last year, seven individuals were chosen.

Elaine Marsh helped keep the Crooked River clean. Jean Beaty broke a gender barrier by joining the Ohio Wildlife Council. Harvey Webster worked at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and helped return bald eagles to Ohio. To nominate someone, send an online form or a paper letter to the ODNR Special Projects office. The address is 2045 Morse Road, Building D‑3, Columbus, Ohio 43229. Make sure the letter is sent to Jona Ison‑Ahmed, Hall of Fame Coordinator. The final list will be announced at the Ohio State Fair later this year. It’s a chance to honor people who have made real changes for the environment.
