Celestial Visitors: Asteroids Zoom Past Earth

Did you know that Earth is about to have some close encounters with space rocks? In the next few days, five asteroids will fly by our planet. NASA is keeping a close eye on these visitors, sharing details like their size, distance, and when they'll pass by on an online dashboard. What's interesting is that October 26 will be the busiest day, with three asteroids zooming past. The smallest one is the size of a house, and the biggest are as large as airplanes. The smallest will come the closest, just 132, 000 miles away. On October 27 and 28, we'll see one asteroid each day. One of them, an airplane-sized rock, will pass by at 2. 4 million miles. Another, bus-sized rock, will get much closer, only 148, 000 miles away.

Earlier this month, on October 24, four asteroids flew by Earth. These were much larger, with one being the size of a skyscraper. Scientists worry about these big ones because they could cause major destruction if they hit Earth. NASA found two of the October 24 asteroids just a month before they passed. While we can use rockets to deflect dangerous asteroids, it takes time to prepare. Recent drills showed that the space community isn't ready to handle these close calls on short notice. Even though none of these asteroids will hit Earth, it's still important to keep a close watch. One day, an asteroid might be on a collision course, but if we detect it early enough, we might be able to dodge this cosmic bullet.
