CES 2025: The Monitors That Stood Out

This year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas was packed with new computer monitors, but many were just minor updates from last year. However, a few really caught our attention. One of the highlights was LG's new 6K monitor, the UltraFine 32U990A. With a resolution of 6144×3456 pixels, it's a dream come true for professionals who need extra screen real estate. The market for high-resolution monitors is pretty niche and expensive, with options like the Apple Pro Display XDR. LG's offering is a welcome addition, especially since it's the first 6K monitor to feature Thunderbolt 5. This means it can potentially handle more bandwidth, up to 120Gbps, compared to Thunderbolt 4's max of 40Gbps.

The catch? LG hasn't revealed the refresh rate yet, so we don't know how much bandwidth the monitor needs. But if you pair it with a Thunderbolt 5 PC, you might get a bandwidth boost. Plus, Thunderbolt 5 can deliver up to 240W of power, which is a significant jump from Thunderbolt 4's 100-140W. Interestingly, Apple's own 6K monitor only has Thunderbolt 3, making LG's monitor a better match for the latest MacBook Pros and Mac Mini. The 32U990A also has a design that feels very Apple-like, suggesting LG might be targeting Apple users.
