ChatGPT Gets a Smart Upgrade
San Francisco, California, USA,Wednesday, May 6, 2026
All ChatGPT models are getting a new “memory source” that shows users exactly which previous chats, documents or other data points the AI used to craft its answer. This transparency helps users understand why the bot says what it does.
The update goes live today for everyone who uses ChatGPT, replacing the older GPT‑5. 3 Instant as the default engine. Free users can try the new model, but personalized memory features are currently limited to Plus and Pro plans on the web. Mobile access will follow soon, and eventually all tiers—Free, Go, Business and Enterprise—will get the full set of personalization tools.
It is still unclear when Apple’s integration with ChatGPT will switch to GPT‑5. 5 Instant, but the upgrade is already available on the main platform.
