The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service has announced a massive recall of nearly 5 million pounds of frozen chicken products. The recall is due to the potential presence of tiny metal fragments in the food.

Company Involved

The recall involves Hormel Foods Corp., based in Austin, Minnesota. The affected products are ready-to-eat frozen chicken breast and thigh items, distributed to food service locations across the country between February 10 and September 19.

Affected Products

Several products are included in the recall:

  • 13.9-pound cases of Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Thigh Meat (Item Code: 65009)
  • 13.8-pound cases of 3-ounce and 4-ounce Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast (Item Codes: 77531, 46750)
  • 23.8-pound cases of 5-ounce Hormel Fire Braised Meats All Natural Boneless Chicken Breast (Item Code: 86206)
  • 13.95-pound cases of Boneless Chicken Breast With Rib Meat (Item Code: 134394)

Look for the establishment number P-223 inside the USDA inspection mark on the packaging.

How the Issue Was Discovered

The company received multiple customer complaints about finding metal in the products. After an investigation, Hormel Foods determined that the metal originated from a conveyor belt.

What You Should Do

The Food Safety and Inspection Service is concerned that some of these products may still be in hotels, restaurants, and institutions. They advise these locations to discard any recalled items.
