Chile’s Copper Boom: New Projects Light the Way

BHP and Freeport-McMoRan have just filed two massive copper projects with Chile’s environmental review board, a clear sign that mining investment is picking up again in the country. The first plan, called “Nueva Concentradora Escondida, ” is worth $5 billion and would replace the aging Los Colorados plant, giving the world’s biggest copper producer a new life span. If green‑lit, the plant could start working around 2031–32 and process about 460 000 tonnes of ore daily in the Antofagasta region. \ The second proposal comes from Freeport-McMoRan’s Chilean arm, Minera El Abra. It plans to pour $7. 5 billion into a new concentrator, desalination plant and other facilities to keep the mine running for another 40 years. Production could jump by more than 300 000 tonnes of copper each year once the project is up and running in 2033. \

Analysts say these moves reflect a growing global appetite for copper, driven by electric cars, power grids and the shift to clean energy. They also point to a new Chilean government that has cut red tape and lowered corporate taxes from 27 % to 23 %, making the country more attractive for big projects. Finance Minister Jorge Quiroz told reporters that Chile wants a fast, fair permitting process that still protects the environment. \ Despite earlier delays, about $18 billion worth of projects have been stuck in bureaucracy. The president’s recent promise to unlock these approvals signals a positive change that investors are already feeling. Experts like Cristian Cifuentes and Victor Frangi highlight that while demand is global, local conditions—clear rules, stable politics, quick permits—are what finally move the needle. \ Yet Chile is not alone in courting mining money. Argentina, Peru and even the Democratic Republic of Congo are sharpening their offers, with initiatives like large‑investment incentives and faster authorisations. To stay ahead, Chile is focusing on efficiency upgrades such as the new Escondida concentrator and incorporating desalination into its water strategy, aiming to keep the country competitive in a crowded field.
