Chile's Wildfires: A Critical Look at the Ongoing Disaster

Chile, ConcepciónSunday, January 18, 2026

State of Emergency Declared

In Chile, wildfires are causing serious trouble. The president, Gabriel Boric, has called a state of emergency in two areas: Ñuble and Biobío. These places are about 500km south of the capital, Santiago.

Devastation and Loss

  • 16 people have died.
  • Over 20,000 have been forced to leave their homes.
  • Around 250 houses near the city of Concepción have been destroyed.

Challenging Conditions

The situation is worsening due to strong winds and high temperatures, making it difficult for firefighters to control the fires. Currently, there are 24 fires burning across the country, with the most dangerous ones in Ñuble and Biobío. The fires have already burned 20,000 hectares of land.

Evacuations and Heatwave

The cities of Penco and Lirquen, near Concepción, have seen the most evacuations. These cities have a combined population of 60,000 people. The heat is also a major concern, with temperatures expected to reach 38°C in the next two days.

A Recurring Disaster

This isn't the first time Chile has faced such disasters. Two years ago, forest fires killed over 120 people in the Valparaíso region. It's clear that these fires are a recurring issue, and the country needs to find better ways to handle them.
