North Texas is feeling the chill as a winter storm brings icy conditions and power outages to the area. Thousands of people are in the dark as the storm causes issues with the electric grid. Oncor, the state's largest electricity provider, is working hard to restore power to affected customers.

Storm Causes Widespread Outages

The storm is causing problems across the state, with 19,561 customers without power due to 678 active outages.

  • Tarrant County: 570 customers affected
  • Dallas County: 996 customers affected
  • Cherokee County: Roughly 3,000 customers without power

Main Issue: Ice Accumulation

The primary concern is ice accumulation, which can weigh down tree limbs and cause them to snap onto power lines. This is a serious problem that can cause widespread outages.

The storm is also a test for the state's electric grid, which has been under scrutiny since the deadly 2021 storm that left more than 240 people dead.

Oncor's Response

Oncor is working around the clock to restore power, with more than 10,000 workers on the job. The company is also urging customers to report outages and downed power lines.

How to Report an Outage

Texans can:

  • Text "OUT" to 66267
  • Call (888)-313-4747
  • Use the MyOncor app
  • Visit Oncor.com

If you spot a downed power line, stay far away and call 911.

Preparing for Winter Weather

The storm is a reminder of the importance of being prepared for winter weather. It's crucial to have a plan in place in case of power outages, including:

  • Having a backup power source
  • Staying warm and safe
