China Diplomat Meets US Counterpart to Challenge New Hong Kong Security Rules
Chinese Official Condemns U.S. Alert on Hong Kong Security Measures
On March 27, the top Chinese official in Hong Kong—Commissioner Cui Jianchun—met with U.S. Consul General Julie Eadeh to express strong disapproval of a recent American public alert concerning Hong Kong’s new security regulations.
Cui described the U.S. action as a form of interference in China’s internal affairs and urged Washington to cease meddling in Hong Kong’s governance.
Earlier this month, the Hong Kong government tightened its national security laws. The amendment now criminalizes refusal to reveal passwords or aid in decrypting electronic devices for those involved in security cases.
In response, the U.S. Consulate General issued a security alert on March 26, advising American citizens to contact the consulate if detained under the new rules.
The U.S. Consulate did not reply to a request for comment outside business hours, leaving the full details of the diplomatic exchange unclear.
