No, it's not quite the Sputnik moment some are making it out to be. After all, a satellite in space was a direct military threat. But an open-source AI? That's different. DeepSeek isn't trying to control how people use it. Unlike 5G, where Chinese companies like Huawei are setting global standards, DeepSeek's code is open for anyone to inspect. This makes it less worrying than other tech power plays. Even TikTok, which could let China spy on US citizens, isn't as concerning as some make it out to be. Still, DeepSeek shows China is producing top-notch computer scientists. If cheap, inexpensive AI models like DeepSeek become the norm, it could lead to global AI censorship, serving up information that favors the Chinese government. But cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier says not to worry. There are already thousands of developers trying to create similar AI models. If they succeed, no one will dominate the market. This is good news for us, bad news for tech firms like Nvidia and OpenAI. It's not a Sputnik moment, but it's a shift in the tech landscape we can't ignore.
