China’s Hacking Group Targets Americans’ Cellphone Data
Thursday, December 5, 2024
Salt Typhoon didn’t just stop at Americans. They hacked dozens of companies worldwide, including at least eight telecom firms in the US. Some telecom companies like T-Mobile and Lumen have said no customer data was compromised, but in other cases, the hackers allegedly stole telephone audio intercepts and a large amount of call record data.
This metadata, even without the actual conversation content, can reveal a lot about a person’s life, work, and relationships. It’s like a puzzle that when put together, paints a detailed picture.
The White House has made tackling these hackers a priority. President Biden has been briefed several times about these intrusions. Meanwhile, a classified briefing was held for senators about Salt Typhoon’s efforts to compromise American telecom companies.
The briefing was led by key individuals from the FBI’s national intelligence, the Federal Communications Commission, the National Security Council, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
