A 1930 Plymouth Coupe, born as the United States slipped into a tough economic era, has weathered decades of change and now stands proud as the winner at Evergreen’s 2025 Show ’N Shine.
Restoration by Darald Kelley
Darald Kelley of Libby, a seasoned restorer, breathed new life into the old metal. His work included:
- Swapping in a 1970 Plymouth Barracuda engine
- Installing a modern Ford axle
- Adding power steering, brakes, and electric windows
The result? A “mom’s car” that feels as comfortable today as it did back in the 1930s.
Show ’N Shine: Kalispell’s Premier Car Event
The largest car gathering in Kalispell attracts enthusiasts who pour time and money into preserving vehicles that might otherwise be scrapped. Even with four inches of rain, Kelley’s Coupe stood out among chrome‑laden showpieces. He explained how the upgrades let a 1930s chassis keep pace with today’s fast cars, and his friends admired the technical tweaks he described in plain terms like coil‑over suspension and rack‑and‑pinion steering.
Kelley’s Journey
- At twelve, he fixed a 1955 Chevy
- Army service in Vietnam exposed him to Hot Rod Magazine’s glossy images, sparking a lifelong mission
- After retiring from the Army in 2021, he devoted himself full time to projects like the Plymouth Coupe
- Served as vice president of Montana’s oldest active car club
Looking Ahead
Kelley plans to return next year for the 2026 Show ’N Shine, hoping to bring more restored classics to the field. In the meantime he continues hunting hidden gems—most recently rescuing a 1956 Ford Thunderbird Convertible from a shed, convinced it can be brought back to life.
