Cleveland Dreams Big: WNBA Expansion on the Horizon

Cleveland's got its eyes on the WNBA prize! With women's pro basketball gaining popularity fast, the Rock Entertainment Group (also linked to the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers) is keen to bring a WNBA expansion team to the city. The goal? To use their platform to promote equal opportunities and unite the community through sports, according to Nic Barlage, CEO of the Cavaliers and Rock Entertainment Group. Why Cleveland? The city boasts a rich history with women's hoops, having previously hosted the Rockers from 1997 to 2003. Plus, it's home to a massive, NBA-sized arena – Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse – that can seat 19, 000 fans. The Women’s Final Four this year, held at this very venue, was a sold-out success, thanks in part to the buzz around Iowa's Caitlin Clark.

The WNBA is planning to grow, with three new teams (Golden State, Portland, and Toronto) joining soon, making it a total of 15 franchises. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has hinted that a 16th team could be added by 2028. Other cities in the running include Kansas City, where NFL quarterback Patrick Mahomes is part of a group trying to secure a WNBA franchise. St. Louis and Philadelphia are also contenders. Cleveland might have the edge due to its strong women's basketball history and the capacity of its arena. Plus, it’s no stranger to hosting major sports events, having recently hosted the NFL draft and NBA All-Star Weekend.
