Climate Fight: Are We Doing Enough?

You've probably heard about climate change and how we're trying to slow it down. But guess what? The United Nations says our efforts aren't enough. They looked at plans from nearly 200 countries to cut carbon emissions. The bad news? These plans won't even cut pollution much by 2030. This makes it super hard to keep global warming under 1. 5 degrees Celsius this century. Yikes! It gets worse. Greenhouse gases have gone up by over 11 percent in the last 20 years.

The UN isn't happy with this. They want countries to do more, and fast! Scientists are even brainstorming crazy ideas like big space shields or filling the sky with sulfur to block heat. But these might not be enough if we don't get serious about cutting emissions. The current plans only aim to cut emissions by 2. 6 percent by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. That's not even close to the 43 percent reduction we need to reach net-zero carbon by 2050. Simon Stiell, who's in charge of UN Climate Change, isn't surprised by these findings. He hopes countries will come up with stronger plans next year. World leaders will talk about this at the upcoming UN climate conference. But will these new plans make a difference? Time will tell.
