CNN: Who's Really in Control?
The Netflix Deal and CNN's Hopes
CNN finds itself in a challenging position, much like a hot potato that everyone wants a piece of. Initially, Netflix expressed interest in acquiring most of CNN's parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, but not the news networks. They were more interested in the movie studios and streaming services.
CNN staff saw this as a positive development, remembering the layoffs that followed the cancellation of CNN+ just a month after its launch. They hoped this new deal would allow them to focus on their work without the threat of sudden changes.
Enter President Trump
However, the situation has become more complicated with President Trump's involvement. Known for his criticism of CNN, which he often labels as "fake news," Trump has expressed his desire for the network to be sold. This level of presidential involvement in business deals is unusual, but Trump has a history of such actions, including suing CBS's 60 Minutes and securing a settlement.
Trump is now backing the Ellison family's bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery. The Ellisons are a wealthy and influential family, with Larry Ellison being the co-founder of Oracle and his son David currently heading Paramount Global.
Changes at CBS and Concerns at CNN
The Ellisons have made significant changes at CBS that seem to cater to conservative viewpoints. They hired a conservative think tank head as ombudsman and a right-of-center journalist as editor in chief. Additionally, they ended Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
These changes have raised concerns among CNN staff. If the Netflix deal goes through, CNN could still be sold to another entity, such as a local TV giant, an investment fund, or even Paramount. The Ellisons have suggested that CNN is worth very little, which has left staffers feeling anxious.
Trump's Influence and CNN's Future
Trump's comments about CNN's leadership are unprecedented. CNN anchor Jake Tapper has described Trump as thin-skinned and desiring an obedient press. Meanwhile, Paramount is attempting to build trust, promising to save Hollywood from being swallowed by Netflix. However, major investors in their bid have ties to Trump, including the Saudi Crown Prince and Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner.
CNN staff are unhappy about the possibility of Trump allies owning their network. The auction is still ongoing, and the Netflix deal is not yet final. There is no clear picture of who will ultimately own or control CNN, leaving the situation in a state of uncertainty and chaos.
