Coke Jumps into Prebiotic Soda Game
USATuesday, February 18, 2025
Prebiotics are fibers that help beneficial bacteria grow in the gut, which is believed to improve digestive health. But, these health benefits are not yet proven. Younger consumers, like millennials and Gen Z, are interested in these products. But, health claims can lead to problems. Poppi is currently in settlement talks over a lawsuit challenging their marketing claims.
Coca-Cola has been eyeing the prebiotic soda category for years. Olipop's CEO mentioned that both Coke and PepsiCo had approached them about a potential sale. Pepsi is also planning to launch its own prebiotic soda in 2025. Coke has the advantage of being a soda giant with a strong marketing and distribution network. However, they have had failures in the past, like pulling Coke Spiced off the shelves in 2024 and slashing distribution of its Aha sparkling water brand in 2023.
