Colombia’s Election: A Left‑leaning Surge Faces a Split Opposition

Bogotá, Colombia,Monday, April 27, 2026

Ivan Cepeda is leading the presidential race with 44.3% support, a clear advantage over his rivals and a sign that the left‑wing coalition may keep its hold on power.
The poll, conducted by Invamer and reported through Noticias Caracol and Blu Radio, surveyed 3,800 people and has a margin of error of ±2%. It shows Cepeda’s popularity rising by 7.2 percentage points since February, while his opponents Abelardo De La Espriella and Paloma Valencia have also gained ground at 21.5% and 19.8%, respectively.

The numbers suggest that if a runoff is required, Cepeda would win comfortably against either candidate.

  • Against De La Espriella: 54.6% to 42.6%
  • Against Valencia: 51.2% to 46.6%

Center‑left figures Claudia López and Sergio Fajardo trail far behind with only 3.6% and 2.5%, effectively removing them from serious contention.

The stakes are high: Cepeda promises to push forward the social reforms championed by President Gustavo Petro, aiming to reduce poverty and inequality. More than 41 million voters will cast ballots on May 31, with a possible second round on June 21 if no one achieves an outright majority.
