Colorado fights back against Space Command move to Alabama

Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Colorado Springs, USAFriday, June 26, 2026

A legal showdown is unfolding as Alabama’s top lawyer urges a federal court to dismiss Colorado’s lawsuit over the relocation of the U.S. Space Command (SPACECOM) headquarters. The state argues that Colorado is attempting to weaponize the courts against a presidential decision rooted in national security—calling it "politics dressed up as law."

A Decade of Shifting Fortunes

The dispute traces back to 2019, when the Air Force conducted a rigorous review of potential sites. Redstone Arsenal in Alabama emerged as the clear winner—lower costs, superior mission alignment, and flawless compliance with requirements. President Trump approved the move, making it official.

Yet when President Biden took office, his administration reassessed the decision—only to confirm Alabama’s superiority. Despite this, Biden reversed course, opting to keep SPACECOM in Colorado Springs. Now, under Trump’s return to the White House, Alabama has been reinstated as the permanent home.

Colorado Fights Back—But Is It Too Late?

Colorado responded with a lawsuit, aiming to block the relocation. Alabama’s attorney general dismissed the move as "another delay tactic"—a pattern of political interference in a decision already settled multiple times.

Meanwhile, SPACECOM has already begun its transition. In April, the command opened its first facility in Huntsville, Alabama, with construction on a permanent headquarters set to begin next year. Over 200 employees have relocated, with nearly 2,000 expected by the time the move is complete.

A Deeper Question: Who Decides National Security?

At its core, this battle isn’t just about geography—it’s about executive authority versus legal challenges. Should presidential decisions on national security be subject to endless judicial scrutiny every time a new administration changes direction?

Alabama insists the answer is no. Colorado disagrees. And in the meantime, Huntsville prepares to become the nerve center of America’s space defense.
