Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA)

Colorado Springs is experimenting with Stone Matrix Asphalt (SMA), a thicker and more durable asphalt designed to withstand heavy traffic, particularly on busy roads like Woodmen Road. The city conducted research in Denver before implementing this new material.

Fiberglass and Kevlar-Infused Asphalt

In addition to SMA, the city is testing asphalt mixed with fiberglass and Kevlar—yes, the same material used in bulletproof vests! These additives aim to extend road life and resist cracking. After a decade of testing, the results have been promising.

Weather Resistance

The city is closely monitoring these test patches to assess their performance under Colorado’s extreme weather conditions, including summer heat and winter freeze-thaw cycles. If successful, these materials could become standard in future road construction.

Recycled Asphalt

Colorado Springs is also using recycled asphalt for paving, marking its second year of this eco-friendly practice. Currently, it’s being applied on Oro Blanco Drive, contributing to a broader effort to improve road durability and sustainability.
